The dwarves can see it like anyone else, but they also feel it glinting in the fissures.

Seeded: c. 3,000 years before year zero (First Age), by Astralis, into the rock of Sky Spear (and near the volcano)

Story

Star metal is one reason the Dwarves never left the place they were born. They built Kharag Duun above the deposit c. 2,000 years before year zero, taking it as a sign that the powers had made a home for them. Around year 100 they left the Bronze Age by melding magic from the Great Crystals with star metal, and became smiths whose creations blend the two. The Stone Talus raised the Magical Forge in the same years. Then the dwarves sat idle for five centuries; since the Bazaar rose, c. year 500, they have sold star metal there.

Now

Kharag Duun is full of diplomats and star metal. When the third meteor fell, the dwarves reached it first and agreed to share its metal fairly; since then the Bazaar has been flooded with “meteor daggers”, all fake, while the real metal stays in dwarven hands.
