Atlas poured all his power into breaking magic itself.

c. year 630 (Third Age), by Atlas

Story

Atlas was disgusted that war had become druids and misdirection instead of steel on steel, and he tried to shatter the Great Crystals. Only one shattered: the one on the Last Tide’s island, chosen, it is said, by chance. The rest cracked.

Consequences

  • The cracks are still spreading, slowly, like sand through an hourglass. One day there may be no magic left.
  • The surge ran across the whole continent, and plants, beasts and everything living twisted into Monstrosities. The world had no ogres before; now it does.
  • Magic survives, but the nearer the broken crystal, the wilder it gets.
  • Svarog, delighted and baffled, founded the Mages’ Guild. Astralis, angry, collapsed the Left Eye of Atlas (Collapse of the Left Eye).
  • Cinderforge ringed its cracked crystal with the Pillars of Magic Harnessing.

Now

Mortals don’t know that a god, Atlas, did it on purpose.
